TPACK readings

These two articles riterated my feelings about the fact that teachers need to be preparing students to not only be literate in text but literate using technology to increase skills. It made me feel good as a teacher to know that I have incorporated some of the ideas suggested in the articles. My students love researching on the internet and I find their writing and reading skills improved the more we spent time using computers. However, with the experience that I have had teaching not many teachers are comfortable in venturing off and using something other than paper and pencil. Several limitations I forsee is the lack of funding and lack of time devoted to provide teachers professional development or training in using such technologies such as digital storybooks, movie maker, etc. Many districts have not yet raised the bar when it comes to writing district goals that includes creating technological literate students. Until school districts see this as a viable need then teachers will continue to do the same paper and pencil tasks.

  1. As a new teacher, I'm so excited to use technology as much as feasible in my future classrooms. While student teaching in the sixth grade, I worked with the class as they researched online for a science project. Many of the students had little to no computer access at home and some had never used computers before; therefore, many of the students struggled with the project because they were so lost online. I know that this isn't the case in many places, but I'd never before considered the socioeconomic factor in relation to technology and students. As teachers, even if we get past using paper and pencils, we have to keep in mind that some students will have even less familiarity with basic technology than anticipated.

I really like your point about the school districts raising the bars. I had always thought of integrating technology as something that teachers would do as the teachers wanted, not something that the teachers might have to do.

  2. Both of these posts are interesting insights - there are a lot of factors involved in using and integrating technology. Miss D makes a great point - is technology something teachers can use if they want to? Or is it something they should just do? After discussing TPACK in class I hope we can come up with an answer!
